Aussies Abroad: Chidiac's Atleti win third straight title

Rising Westfield Matildas star Alex Chidiac was part of a third straight La Liga Femenina title victory for Atletico Madrid on Sunday evening (AEST).

Atleti beat Real Sociedad 3-1 on the final day of the campaign to finish six points clear of second-placed Barcelona after the Catalans’ 1-0 loss at Granadilla Tenerife.

In doing so, the Madrid club joins Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano and Athletic Bilbao as the only clubs in the league’s history to win three titles in a row.

Head coach José Luis Sánchez told the club’s official website the key to the third straight title was: “to have very good players, to have good people in the locker room and the desire they have to keep winning. They have shown it again.

“Now that we have just won the league, they are already thinking about the final of the Queen's Cup next Saturday. They know that the season is not over and this has just started.”

Atleti have the Copa de la Reina final to look forward to – also against Sociedad – on May 12, kick-off 4:30am AEST.

Former Adelaide United and Melbourne City starlet Chidiac, 20,  joined the Spanish giants in July 2018, relocating more than 17,500km away to become the first Australian to play for Madrid.

She has scored three goals in 20 league appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Westfield Matildas defender Aivi Luik finished up her Spanish league campaign with Levante in a 1-0 loss to Sevilla. Levante finished third.
