Aussies Abroad: Boyle does it again, Olyroo shines in Scotland

Aussies Abroad action for the weekend had a distinct Scottish flavour, as Martin Boyle stole the show again while Cameron Devlin hit the ground running with Hearts.

Our weekend wrap begins in Scotland, where Boyle proved the difference for Hibernian in a 1-0 win over St Johnstone. 

The Socceroos forward's penalty on the hour mark sealed a win that maintained Hibs' unbeaten start to the season, leaving them in second place, one point shy of ladder leaders Rangers - who they meet next week. 

Remaining in the Scottish Premiership, Olyroos midfielder Devlin covered almost every blade of grass on his Hearts starting debut. 

Fans were singing Devlin’s name during a performance of tenacious tacking, boundless energy, crisp passing and intelligent positioning.

The emphatic 3 – 0 win over Livingston sees his side finish the weekend level on points with Hibs, in third position. 


Elsewhere, Motherwell overcame Ashley Maynard-Brewer’s Ross County 2 – 1, moving them into 3rd on the ladder.

It was a disappointing day for Tom Rogic, who played 90 minutes in Celtic's 1-1 draw at home to Dundee United. 

Moving to England, where Stoke City supporters are keeping their fingers crossed after towering defender Harry Souttar was forced to leave the field with an injury in a 2 – 0 win over Callum Elder’s Hull City.

Souttar was captain for Stoke in the absence of Joe Allen and produced another sparkling performance before a first-half knock eventually got the better of him.

Elder played the full match at left-back for Hull in what was his 8th appearance this season.

Kenny Dougall continued his consistent start to the season for Blackpool, playing a full match in the heart of midfield.

The Seasiders claimed a 1 – 0 home win over Barnsley and climb to 14th on The Championship ladder.

In League One, Bailey Wright was brought on in the final moments to shore up Sunderland’s 1 – 0 lead against Bolton.

The defender was able to do just that, with the victory seeing the Black Cats remain equal top.

To Germany, where midfielder Jackson Irvine played his second match for Bundesliga 2. Side FC St. Pauli as they defeated Karlsruher SC 3 – 1.


The 37-cap Socceroo lasted 75 minutes, picking up a yellow card in the 71st minute with St Pauli now just one point of top spot.

In Bundesliga action, Ajdin Hrustic was an unused substitute for Eintracht Frankfurt during their 1-1 draw with Koln.

Fellow defender Trent Sainsbury’s KV Kortrijk conceded twice in the final 10 minutes to draw 2–2 against Zulte Waregem.

Moving to Japan, where striker Adam Taggart played the final 15 minutes of Cezero Osaka’s 2-1 defeat to Kashima antlers in the J.League.

Meanwhile, fellow attacker Mitchell Duke played a full 90 minutes for Fagiano Okayama who enjoyed a last gasp 95th-minute equalizer in its 1–1 draw against Blaubitz Akita.

In Sunday action, Maty Ryan was an unused substitute in Real Sociedad's 1-0 win over Elche in Spain. 

Over in Turkey, Aziz Behich started for his new team Giresunspor against his old club Kayserispor - with the match ending 1-1. 

Brad Smith picked up an assist and played 70 minutes in Seattle Sounders' 2-1 win over Sporting KC.
