Aussie coach signs new long-term deal with Arsenal

Former Melbourne City Championship-winning Westfield W-League coach Joe Montemurro has signed a new long-term deal as the boss of Arsenal’s women’s team.

Montemurro took charge of the Lady Gunners in late 2017 and has enjoyed immediate success with the North London club.

He has guided Arsenal to the Continental Tyres Cup, while they also reached the final of the Women’s FA Cup and are unbeaten in the start of the 2018/19 FA Women’s Super League to sit at the top.

“I’m really humbled and privileged,” Montemurro told Arsenal Player.

“For the club to believe that I’m the person to take the team to the next level is a great honour and you’re going to have to put up with me for a little bit longer, unfortunately!

“So to be here for a longer term and to have that stability is always something that I’ve thrived for and it’s been great to be given that opportunity.

“I think that we’ve just started a really exciting journey with the women’s team. We’ve started to bring back a little bit of the DNA that I keep on talking about.”

Montemurro enjoyed plenty of success in the Westfield W-League with Melbourne City, leading them to the title in their inaugural season without losing a game.

He also spent time as an assistant to the Hyundai A-League team before swapping Melbourne for London in November last year.
