Arnold: Liverpool the template for free-scoring Caltex Socceroos

Graham Arnold revealed the Caltex Socceroos are taking inspiration from Premier League leaders Liverpool for the fluid attacking style which delivered a 5-0 dismantling of Oman.

Australia issued a stern warning a week out from the AFC Asian Cup with a dominant display against Pim Verbeek's side in Dubai.

Three members of a fleet-footed front four got on the scoresheet to imbue the continental champions with fresh confidence ahead of their Group B opener against Jordan.

Arnold's four matches in charge have now yielded 13 goals and he referred to Jurgen Klopp's high-flying Reds as the template for an entertaining end product.

"I've been studying Liverpool a lot. That's the system and the style we want to play," Arnold told Fox Sports.

"We expect every time we go on the pitch that we're on the front foot.

"We've got not only four goalscorers up front, but saw Jackson Irvine score from [the number] six [spot], Massimo Luongo can score from six.

"It's more the patterns we're playing and they'll get much better.

"Tonight was okay. There's a lot of improvement left in the side and a lot of work to do this week."

Milos Degenek, who faced the Merseysiders in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League this season, was one of two second-half scorers along with substitute Irvine.

Andrew Nabbout, Chris Ikonomidis and Awer Mabil had earlier opened a three-goal advantage inside 24 minutes.

Asked whether the convincing team performance had eased selection headaches, Arnold said: "No, I think that's made it worse! In a very good way.

"Chris Ikonomidis was fantastic tonight, Mabil fantastic, Andrew Nabbout did very, very well as a number nine.

"It's about getting a deeper pool of players, more depth and I think the side we put out tonight showed the depth is there.

"There were a lot of young, fresh faces and inexperienced players but with the right senior people around them and the right leaders around them, they'll help them on their way."

Tom Rogic was left out of the matchday squad on a precautionary basis but Arnold confirmed the playmaker would be "100 per cent" fit to face Jordan on January 6.

That match gets underway at 10:00pm AEDT, with Syria and Palestine - the other teams in Australia's group - going head-to-head five hours later.
