Liberal leader Tony Abbott has given his support to Moya Dodd's candidacy to become the first Australian elected to the Executive Committee of FIFA.

If successful, Dodd would also be the first woman elected to world football-s governing body.

In a letter sent to Dodd, Abbot said: "I was pleased to hear of your nomination by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to contest the election for the women-s football representative on the Executive Committee of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

"Australian football has grown enormously as a participation sport and has a bright future at both elite and community levels.

"The success of football in Australia is due in large part to the contribution of a dedicated group of volunteers who have steered it into the mainstream of Australia-s highly competitive sporting landscape.

"You should rightly be proud of your contribution to the growth of football in Australia. Both on and off the field you have been a driving force behind a sport that has not only enjoyed success on the international field but has become a vehicle for unifying communities and breaking down cultural barriers. Your contributions particularly promoted the opportunities for women to be a leading part of the game-s development.

"Your experience in Australia and the region means that you are well placed to make a strong contribution to the FIFA Executive Committee should you be elected.

"On behalf of the Coalition I am pleased to support your nomination and wish you well for the remainder of your campaign."
