A-League Goal of Matchweek 3 – Tate Russell

Tate Russell's thunderous strike not only clinched Western Sydney Wanderers' first win of the A-League season but also claimed Goal of Matchweek 3 honours.

The exciting 21-year-old wing-back raced on to Simon Cox's lay off and blazed a stinging drive past the outstretched hand of Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Jack Duncan from the edge of the box in the 57th minute at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Russell's second A-League goal in his 29 competition games earned Carl Robinson's side a two-goal advantage against the Wanderers head coach's former club, after centre-back Ziggy Gordon had opened the scoring with a seventh-minute header.

Captain Nigel Boogaard offer a response for the embattled Jets, pulling a goal back in the 73rd minute, but the Red and Black held on to claim a 2-1 win and collect their first points of the season, following an opening round home defeat against Macarthur FC.
